Commercial Group rocks the ABC Awards

Commercial Group is proud to announce all three projects we nominated for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Greater Baltimore Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards have been announced as winners! Both Commercial Construction and Commercial Interiors have been recognized for delivering exceptional craftsmanship and navigating immense complexities under the Commercial Group umbrella.

These three awards reinforce the core values that define Commercial Group: an unwavering commitment to excellence, proactive vision, structural and personal integrity, and strong partnerships with repeat clients built on service. Congratulations to the incredible teams who made these achievements possible!

HILL HOUSE AT BEECHFIELD – DIAMOND AWARD WINNER

This beautiful 150-unit affordable senior residential development in Bowie, MD, features bright, modern spaces, a soaring 25-foot entrance porte-cochère, and an NGBS Green certification. During construction, the team faced a major challenge when the local utility failed to deliver permanent power as scheduled. To prevent a total standstill at the framing stage, the team engineered an innovative workaround, deploying two massive temporary generators and large HVAC units to pump conditioned air through the building, keeping temperature and humidity within the strict thresholds required to install delicate interior finishes. This foresight kept the project perfectly on track and allowed the team to achieve substantial completion three months ahead of schedule with a perfect zero punch list, earning stunning praise from repeat client KCG Companies and a Construction Excellence Award from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

PERKINS HOMES PHASE III – PLATINUM AWARD WINNER

Part of a vital community-wide neighborhood revitalization in Baltimore City, this 152-unit affordable multifamily project consists of two four-story wood-framed buildings over concrete podiums and features light-sensing exterior pergolas that adjust automatically with the sun. Excavation was immediately thrown into jeopardy when unforeseen chromium ore process residue contaminated soil was discovered on site. The team swiftly developed a remediation plan and expertly resequenced the construction schedule, shifting heavy operations to Building B while actively executing soil excavation at Building A, successfully overcoming a 45-day delay while tightly managing daily community traffic safety logistics. Vincent Bennett, CEO of repeat client McCormack Baron Salazar, praised the partnership as “a testament to our commitment to building more than just structures, but an inclusive community”. Backed by pristine drywall prefabrication from Commercial Interiors, the team achieved substantial completion exactly on time in October 2025 with zero items on the punch list.

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLOOMBERG STUDENT CENTER – PLATINUM AWARD WINNER

The new 148,000-square-foot Bloomberg Student Center is a landmark mass timber facility dedicated to student life on Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Campus, targeting a LEED Platinum certification. This diverse project included a state-of-the-art food hall, a pub, a cafe, a 250-seat performance theatre, dance studios, recording studios, a digital media center, and even a gaming lounge. The ceilings were elaborate, complex and sometimes unique to the project. Commercial Interiors executed an extensive architectural specialty scope including complex metal pan, wood, and custom felt acoustical ceilings. Because the building’s intricate mechanical, IT, and AV systems were completely concealed, our craftsmen had to frame, adjust, and re-frame wall studs repeatedly to align the architect’s exposed visual lines. Supported by strict project safety management, the team earned an amazing commendation from repeat partner Clark Construction Group for delivering a sustainable, world-class space.
