Commercial Interiors Completes Morgan State University New Student Center – Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall

Commercial Interiors recently completed the construction of Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall, a state-of-the-art support services facility, and the latest addition to Morgan State University’s 152-year-old campus. The $88 million, 139,000sf. building includes a 3-story atrium, a 250-seat recruitment room, and will house nearly 20 student departments. A lushly planted, 10,000sf green roof on the third floor serves faculty, staff, and as special event space for the University President, affording direct views back to the historic campus core.

This dynamic facility creates a transition between the original campus architecture to the north with its beautiful academic quad, and the more contemporary buildings to the south. It incorporates architectural elements from—stone, metal panel, and glazing designed to maximize natural light and visual transparency. The building has achieved LEED Silver certification.

Tyler Hall is another expansion of the urban campus that has been experiencing a growth spurt over the past decade, and now serves as the new front door to students and visitors. The building is named in honor of nationally known philanthropists Calvin E. Tyler Jr., a retired UPS executive and Morgan Alumni, and his wife, Tina. The Baltimore couple are among Morgan’s most prominent benefactors. Their $5 million donation is the largest individual donation in the University’s history.
