Kevin Johnson donates $250,000 in steel to build bridges

Commercial Group CEO Kevin Johnson donated $250,000 worth of repurposed steel beams to Bridging Together, a collaborative effort between Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and Lutheran Disaster Response Carolinas (LDRC). The goal of this donation was to aid in rebuilding bridges destroyed by Hurricane Helene.

One of those bridges now spans 60 feet across Stoney Creek Road in Edneyville, North Carolina, restoring access for 16 families. Affectionately dubbed “The Green Giant” by the local community, the bridge was completed on April 4, just seven months after the hurricane. It was built in only one week by volunteers and residents working side by side.

Engineered by Johann Zimmermann of JZ Engineering, the bridge features concrete abutments and steel pilings driven to bedrock, stretching cleanly from riverbank to riverbank. Its design minimizes debris buildup, safeguards the surrounding environment, and is built to last over 50 years.
Though these bridges stand in North Carolina, they are built Baltimore Strong!
